Pioneer Press:
Tips offered for homeowners
Pete Thomas, president of
Mundelein's Home Improvement Network (www.thehomeimprovement.com) doesn't mind
sharing some of his secrets to celebrate National Home Week April 7-14. For
those homeowners who want to find their own contractor, he offers these tips:
-
Get at least 3 estimates
for your project.
-
Ask friends and neighbors for
referrals, but avoid the Yellow Pages.
-
Request a list of references,
and then check them.
-
Request a copy of their
certificate of insurance.
-
Look for an established
contractor.
-
How long is the warranty?
-
Don't make a decision based
solely on price.
-
Look for professional
designations, which indicate a higher degree of professionalism.
-
Follow your instincts.
If you're a smart consumer, you
call Pete Thomas, the president of The Home Improvement Network in Mundelein at
847.837.8370. He'll give you the names of several reliable contractors, all
established, pre-screened and eager for your business. And yes, he'll do it for
free.
All of his contractors are
carefully evaluated. Thomas verifies references and insists on proof of
insurance. He or one of his company representatives interviews them personally.
Contractors must give two assurances: to service ten homeowners a month, and to
return all phone calls. In return, his membership contractors pay a monthly fee
based on the amount of referrals they receive from the service. His membership
contractors do not raise their costs or fees because they use The Home
Improvement Network.
